The State College branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has a used book sale every spring. I love used book sales. Today I stopped by to browse. I purchased two books: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and George Eliot’s Romola. I’ve heard quite a bit about Romola. I’ve read most of Eliot’s novels and short stories. Romola interests me, for Eliot seemed proud of it , yet many critics are not fond of it. Right now my leisure reading is lacking–but hopefully there’s more time for that this summer.
Eliot said of Romola: “There is no book of mine about which I more thoroughly feel that I swear by every sentence as having been written with my best blood.”
