The 2011 Philadelphia Phillies are the best baseball team I have ever followed. They won 102 regular season games, setting a franchise record. They had four aces in the starting rotation, a dominant closer, a solid defense, and offensive firepower. There is no doubt in my mind that they were the best team in MLB this season. And they were eliminated from the postseason in the NLDS.
A disappointing postseason does not diminish my love for this team.
It is in the waiting that we learn to appreciate things. When the odds are long, when hope seems too bold, when prudent minds are thinking about contingency plans, it is then that the fullness of victory can be felt. I’ve experienced this in baseball when the Phillies won the 2008 championship. The long wait and uncertain road made it all the sweeter. I’ve experienced this in real life several times in the past year.
So for the Phillies 2011 becomes a year to build anticipation for the future. What day do pitchers and catcher report?
