Tonight I sat on my couch watching the Phillies play the Mets on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. My laptop sat beside me, allowing me to chat with friends and follow the Twitter feeds of some of the Phillies beatwriters. My mother called, and we talked about life for an hour. Near the end of our conversation this appeared in my Twitter feed:
Then a retweet:
My immediate response to this news is sadness. It reminds me how broken this world is. I am not sympathetic to Bin Laden or his cause–I think he stood for evil–but I do not delight in the death of my enemy. Humans are prone to hate, prone to segregate. Eliminating Bin Laden may be considered a step toward peace (I am dubious about this; I fear that creating a martyr will incite even more hostility), but I ask myself did love or hate win today?
It grieves me to live in a world where killing is used to combat killing.
I long for peace, for love, for equality, for justice.
