Waltz With Me (When this Song Finishes)

This evening as I studied I was listening to music. Track 9 from Tonic’s album Sugar played. I’ve heard the song Waltz With Me many times before, but this particular time it made me laugh. The lyrics of the chorus begin with: “Waltz with me, my love. . .” There’s nothing particularly funny about the lyrics of the chorus alone, it is the combination of lyrics and time signature.

You see, the song is written in 4/4 time. A waltz is set to 3/4 time. Thus the message of the song is: “Please waltz with me after this song finishes; we’ll get the band to play something in 3/4.”

I guess “Foxtrot with me, my love . . .” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
