Professional Athletics vs Collegiate Athletics

I am a much bigger fan of professional athletics than I am of collegiate athletics. Here are my reasons:

Talent Level: The talent level in professional sports is much higher. The best of the best are on the field/court/ice. When it comes to the level of performance of the best players and the depth of the roster, the highest marks are found in the pros.

Roster Stability: I do not like the rapid turnover on college rosters. Players play a maximum of four years, and many of the best athletes play less than that.

Integrity of the Game: I hear a lot about the integrity and nobility of college sports, and that college athletes are playing for school pride. I don’t buy it. A college athlete is supposed to be a student first and athlete second. But that’s not how his/her time is allocated. Plus athletics are a major cash cow or drain (depending on the program) for the school. Collegiate sports have major financial implications and are not simply contests for school pride. Professional athletes are entertainers. Their job is to perform at a high level. I feel more comfortable supporting a professional athlete than I do a school that is using its students to make money.

My hierarchy of loyalty to teams is as follows:

1. Philadelphia Phillies
2. Philadelphia Eagles
3. Philadelphia Flyers
4. Philadelphia 76ers
5. Temple Owls
6. Penn State Nittany Lions
