Last night I watched the movie Casino for the third time. My television was set to the Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh channel before I turned on my DVD player. So after the movie, when I shut off the DVD player FSN came on. I had muted the volume, so I was just getting the picture. A football game was in progress. Here was my thought process:
I wonder what league this is? The team abbreviations are PIT and DC, so it must be Pittsburgh and Washington DC. What league is playing this time of year? It’s outdoors, and there are no walls on the sidelines, so this is not the Arena Football League. The uniforms look very similar to professional uniforms. The quality of play is terrible. Everyone seems slow. My word, that quarterback throws like a girl. . . and looks like a girl. Wait. Are there girl football leagues? Haha, that reminds me of a muppet quote: “There are girl pirates? Oooh.”
The quote that I was thinking of takes place between the 16 and 20 second mark of this video:
Evidently there are two large semi-pro football leagues for women in the US. The Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) and the National Women’s Football Association (NWFA). Central PA even has a team that plays in Harrisburg.
