Early in my education I was taught the importance of typing two spaces after a period. So I did. It felt very natural. Two spaces after every period, anything less than this felt wrong. Then I went off to college and studied under professors who viewed the second space with disdain. Suddenly I had a space crisis to deal with.
For a brief time I was bi-spaceual. Some papers would feature single spaces, some would have two (I never mixed the two within an individual paper). Gradually my allegiance solidified, however. By the time I finished my undergraduate degree I had become entrenched in the single space crowd. And there I reside, with no intention of ever leaving.
I read an article by Farhad Manjoo regarding single versus double spaces in Slate last week (Space Invaders). It’s an interesting article, and it affirms my single space lifestyle.
On Sunday night at a PSCG Bible study the topic came up. The vote in the group was 11-6 in favor of the single space.
