Grounds for Sculpture

On Saturday I went to the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ (near Trenton). I went with my brother, sister-in-law, nephew, and two of my sisters. The Grounds for Sculpture is an outdoor collection of sculpture, plants, and interesting landscaping that is open year-round.

Grounds for Sculpture

There is a restaurant called Rat’s and a gift shop on one of the borders of the exhibits. The picture below was taken from across a small pond, looking at Rat’s. Several fog machines were rolling mist across the surface of the water. It looked pretty cool; sadly the picture does not do it justice. A large head sits above the water (noticeable in the lower left corner of the picture).

The sculpture below is titled Beast by Karen Petersen. I noticed a marigold head sitting on the lawn, discarded by someone. Suddenly I knew I had to put the marigold on the nose of the beast. I had to.

Art means different things to different people. For instance, the piece below meant different things to my two sisters. One said it looked like an elephant. The other said it looked like a giant sumo loincloth.  I’m not sure what the artist was trying for.

What do you see?

I found a tunnel. On the other side there was a guy wearing the same shirt as me, and he took a picture when I did. I waved to him, and he waved too.

I have a twin; he is one dimensional

One time when I was grocery shopping the person in front of me in the checkout line had many items. The she had problems with her credit card. Then she thought an error had been made on the transaction, so the clerk had to go over everything carefully to convince her that the correct total had been charged to her card. It felt like I stood in line for a long time. My perspective changed after talking to these guys. They’ve been waiting at this door for years, and they don’t even remember why.

Patience is a virtue

I found the Grounds for Sculpture to be very interesting and enjoyable. I could have spent many more hours walking around. The mix of artwork and plant material is great. I’d recommend checking it out yourself.

On the ride back from the Grounds for Sculpture we decided to get a late lunch. We ended up at the Plymouth Meeting Chipotle Mexican Grill, giving me back-to-back days at CMG. Oh the goodness.

Looks like a great place and something Gary and I would enjoy. You may want to check out Brookgreen Gardens (www.brookgreen.org) if you are ever heading to South Carolina. We HIGHLY recommend this fabulous garden gallery. We have gone to SC twice and both times we got the weekly pass…enjoyed the gardens, art, zoo, history, special exhibits, and live music at night in the gardens. We also love the Huntington Beach State Park across the road…none of the crowded comercial beaches for us…we love the natural beauty of this place. Hope you get to go to Brookgreen Gardens sometime. It is a visual feast!!

  • I took a look at the Brookgreen website, it looks very nice. I’m not sure when I’ll be headed south next, but I’ll definitely check it out if I get the chance.
